Weekly Letter - 04 March, 2013

Dear Family,

Well I hope this week has found you well as well as this email. This week has been a very humbling one for me. I have been put in situations where i had to follow Proverbs 3:5-6. I have been very humbled as i have realized this week that i have been some what prideful. sadly enough  to say.

Well the report on the week! I feel like i just emailed you.

Monday - was not Pday =) we went out and worked and stopped by to try to find some new investigators. nothing really worked out.

Tuesday - we went to the Temple, I received many answers to my questions and we had a wonderful spiritual trip to the temple.Things didnt really work out like we had hoped that night. A sister in the ward bought us a bunch of food and we went to pick it up.

Wednesday- We had district meeting and went out finding for a while. ate with a member who has been sick lately. Then we stopped by a part member family that we found and no one knew existed it turns out the 11 year old daughter is not a member but would like to be. We started teaching here. Really good lesson and spiritual experience.

Thursday- I started an exchange with Elder Rivera in surrey. That night we walk the upwards of 10 miles in the pouring rain. I ended up catching a cold. We were soaked. Everything was soaked. Head to toes. My shoes are leaking and have holes in the Soles=) that was fun. The reason we did it was to be obedient. We were out of Kilometers and so we walked. We were walking to the investigators house and he was so christlike he took the shoes off his feet. gave a new socks, brought us coats so that we would be warm. He is not a member but all his family is. THe spirit was so strong as we arrived beaten and worn from the long walk and the cold rain. Sacrifices Bring for the blessings of Heaven.

Friday- was still in surrey we taught a couple of less actives and an amazing lesson with a recent convert family i found that my spanish has improved alot as i got to know the family and was forced to speak spanish and not english because they just got here 3 months ago  were baptized and they dont speak very much english.

Saturday- Our investigator who was progressing so much ended up dropping us. Carlos and Areli. It was a sad experience. but one day they will return. I was still in surrey and i made elder Olsen take care of it. He relied so much on the spirit and was very humbled and grew so much this week as he ran the area all by him self. He did such a good job and i am so proud of him.

Sunday- we had a good fast and testimony meeting the spirit was so strong.

That was the week!  Thank you for all your doing!  I love you so much. Keep Smiling!
I hope that all goes well for you this week.

with my love,

Elder Taylor

Weekly Letter - 26 Feb, 2013

This is Narda.  She was baptized last week.
Good morning Family!

This week seems to have just flown by. I'm in the same seat about the same time each and every week. We have been busy. we work and work and work some more until we are just so tired that kneeling down to pray is hard because you have to get back up.

We have been out working hard with many members and Investigators this week. One in particular is an investigator by the name of Miguel. He has been changing his life around. He stopped drinking Beer and doing drugs he has plans to be married and to get baptized this week. Hopefully.

(Left to Right. Elder Olsen, St. George UT, Me , Elder Pena, Kerns UT, Elder Rivera, St. Catherines Ontario, Elder Buttars, Ogden UT
We are also teaching an investigator named Carlos. and his girlfriend Areli. They are progressing very well and quickly. I have such a great love for Carlos that i can not explain it. It is the most wonderful feeling. I know that he will be baptized. He comes to church and loves it. He knows what we are talking about. he feels like he has met us before. ( which i am sure he has just not here in this life) i also feel the same way. between visits this week he read all of 1st Nephi. and wrote down all of his questions. we are still trying to figure out a date of baptism for him. but nothing seems to fit. we are submitting to the will of the Lord. This is his mission things happen in His time and by His doing. We are just hands of HIS.Fantastic week this week. Dad asked me some questions.

  • How many people are you teaching right now?
~~ we are teaching quite a few people. we are consistently teaching about 10 as of right now.
  • How many baptisms are scheduled?
~~ We have 3 solid baptismal dates as of right now
  • Are you getting along with your companion? (and I want the truth)
~~ Of course we get along. You have to get along to have the spirit. and you have to have the spirit to teach with power and authority and be able to invite people to be baptized. so of course.

  • Any cool spiritual stories you would like to share?
~~ I have had many of my prayers answered this week as well as a deepening of my testimony and a knowledge of the scriptures. cool experiences. I had one the other day. We were in a lesson and i spaced for a minutes and then as i tried coming back in i could not under stand anything that was going on. and It ended up the lesson being passed over to me. and i had been praying and praying that i would be able to speak and testify and i know that the Spanish that came out of my mouth was not mine. it was words i didn't really know. I know you hear about experiences like this all the time but it is amazing as you Spanish is perfect and the lord really gives you that blessing!
  • With the church announcing 58 new missions this last week and lots of new missionaries, has your mission seen an increase in the number of missionaries yet?
~~ We saw an increase last transfer as we Recieved some of the new 18 year old Elders and 19 year old Sisters. we went up about 10 companionships and opened 10 new areas.
  • Name an interesting food item that you ate in the last week?
~~ We had some Pupusas. And i learned how to make real refried beans!

Well family i bid you adue and wish you the best of weeks.
I love you all and will talk to you all soon.

Tell Joshua Congrats and that i love him.

    also give him this--

Te Quiero much Joshua. BIEN HECHO. Cuidate!

Love,

Elder Taylor

Weekly Letter - 12 Feb, 2013

Elder Arteaga & Elder Taylor
Good Afternoon, buenas Tardes,

How is everyone doing.?

This week has been a very busy one. We have been working very hard. We are trying to learn to cope with 2 areas and learning to understand Vancouver better.

We have 5 investigators that have baptismal dates. They are doing very well. All are progressing. This week we are going to set at least 2 more with a couple we found that i told you about in the last letter home. We found them last Saturday while we were following an impression we had to stop by a former investigator that we had been teaching. We stopped by and found his sister and her boyfriend in the house. This last Saturday we had the opportunity to go to his house and the cooked for us and we taught a little bit about how to know if God is really there. We found out later on in the lesson that 5 minutes before we had knocked on the door they had been talking about finding a church that they both liked. They want to get married and raise their kids in a church. Then we knocked on the door and invited them to come to church. He also told me that for some reason even though he has never met me i look familiar to him and that is why he felt like he should let us in.
Elder Taylor & Elder Olsen

We are also teaching another guy that has just touched my heart. He is from Honduras and he is just a really nice guy. We found him while my last companion and I were street contacting and he kind of looks a little rough around the edges. but he agreed that he would like to come to church and meet up with us. The first lesson we taught about the word of wisdom and committed him to be baptized.

It has been such a blessing to be teaching him. He has paid me some very touching compliments as well.

We are teaching a lot of other people right now as well.

My new companion (Elder Olsen) is doing fantastic. He is a year younger then me. We get along great. Its nice being with a white kid again =) not to sound mean... It is hard though because I'm having to teach him Spanish and how to be a missionary... and I barely speak Spanish as well.

He loves to work and work hard. He is from St. George Utah. He worked at the Pizza/Pasta Factory that we went to one time while we were visiting St. George. Mom ordered a salad and had a piece of wood in it. It is down by the temple in the basement of some place.

We have a lot to get done and have to be going really soon to a lunch appointment. i hope your week is fantastic.

I love you ALL!

Congratulations Megs.

Happy Valentines Day.

I'm on the down hill side of my mission... =(

I love you.

Story about Brandons Mission President

Church News and Events

Karl Tilleman: An Example of Determination and Endurance

Contributed By Larry Carter of the Surrey British Columbia Stake
  • 18 JANUARY 2013

A two-time Olympic athlete, award winning lawyer, loving husband, father of five and University of Calgary royalty, “King” Karl M. Tilleman, now Mission President for the Canada Vancouver Mission, showed determination from an early age. This determination led to perseverance, strength of character, a notable career and a very strong relationship with his loving and supportive spouse, Holly Benson Walker.
Born in Ogden, Utah, Karl moved to Calgary, Alberta with his family when his father accepted a teaching position at the University of Calgary. In high school, Karl developed a love for basketball. At the University of Calgary, he quickly began racking up awards: Canada West Player of the Year and All Star in 1981, 1982, 1983, as well as Calgary Male Athlete of the Year 1981 and 1983. Basketball, although a major focus in Karl’s early life, is but a metaphor for determination and enduring to the end.
He played in the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, Alberta in 1983 and in 1984, was a member of Canada’s Basketball team at the Los Angeles Summer Olympics. During his first Olympic game, Karl found himself guarding Michael Jordan, his favourite basketball player, and came to the attention of the NBA’s Denver Nuggets. Karl was drafted in the 4th round of the 1984 NBA draft by the Nuggets, however upon arriving in Denver became very sick with the flu. Mostly recovered, he suited up to play in a pre-season game. When he gained the ball, he made a move toward the basket but stepped on another player’s foot, severely twisting his own ankle. As a result of the injury, Karl was cut from the team, providing an opportunity to fulfill a promise that he had made with the Lord to serve a mission.
After serving in the California Arcadia Mission, Karl attended law school at BYU. While there, he maintained his connection with Canada and traveled with the National Team in 1986 and 1987 and played again for Canada in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea.
Karl graduated summa cum laude (with highest distinction) in 1990 with the Order of the Coif and as editor-in-chief of the Law Review. He clerked for Justice Warren Burger of the United States Supreme Court and even tried to teach Justice Clarence Thomas to play basketball.
After law school, he joined Steptoe & Johnson LLP, a prominent international law firm, and eventually moved to their Phoenix, Arizona office. Here he earned significant peer recognition, including being listed amongst “Best Lawyers in America in 2011” and “Arizona’s Finest Lawyers in 2011.”
Prior to accepting his call in 2011 as Mission President, Karl was interviewed at the White House for an appointment as a Federal Court Judge, but realized that accepting the appointment would considerably change his priorities, so he turned down the position.
In preparing for their mission in British Columbia, President Tilleman and wife Holly had the unique experience of being in the MTC with two of their sons. Now responsible for the Canada Vancouver Mission, covering most of the province of British Columbia, an area 1.3 times the size of Texas. As mission president, he clearly understands his priorities and focuses much of his effort on helping new members become “enduring members.” During his calling, the Church has expanded missionary activity to Haida Gwaii (formerly the Queen Charlotte Islands) where there had been no missionaries since 1970. Very quickly a dependent branch was established.
A few months into their mission while on a proselyting appointment, President and Sister Tilleman visited a prospective member with two of their missionaries. After the lesson and discussion, they were leaving the home when President Tilleman asked permission to pet the owner’s rescued Bull Mastiff. The dog, on a leash, was calm, and the investigator gave permission. President Tilleman reached out to the dog, which suddenly bit his hand. The injury was severe, but he wanted to make light of the incident and proceeded to leave the house when he then fell on the concrete stairs. When he awoke, the paramedics were strapping him onto a backboard and putting a cervical collar on his neck. President Tilleman remembers calling out to their investigator as he was taken to the ambulance “It’s not your fault! I asked to pet him!” Unfortunately, he suffered a paralyzing injury as a result of the fall.
In hospital for seventeen days, President Tilleman acknowledged that the brethren might deem it wise to release him from his service as Mission President, yet he earnestly desired to carry on in spite of the physical challenges. He arranged for his missionary assistants to bring him files and phoned twice a day while he worked to regain his mobility. With Sister Tilleman’s daily assistance, priesthood blessings, his medical team and his life-long determination to persevere, he laboured to regain feeling and movement in his limbs. Today, President Tilleman no longer wears the neck brace and is energetically back holding firesides, training missionaries, meeting and teaching prospective members and bringing smiles to those around him.
Part of President Tilleman’s physiotherapy included regaining the ability to not only walk again, but specifically to be able to lower someone into the waters of baptism and successfully raise them out again. Jenny, the dog owner, was the first person he baptized when he was able to do so. The Tillemans, a forgiving, Christ-like and very determined couple, are now a part of Jenny’s life and part of the fabric of the Richmond Ward.
As a young athlete, Karl, showed determination and endurance; as an adult, President Tilleman continues to be an excellent example of those qualities and most importantly of Christ’s love.

Weekly Letter - 04 February, 2013

Dear Family,

How was your week this week? any cool exciting spiritual experience this week? I want to hear about them.
This week has been an interesting one. Monday was P-day and all of our appointments fell through. and so we didn't have much success.  I did however accidentally try anchovies..... a word to the wise... not the best idea. =) and we had a less active visit and committed the guy to live the word of wisdom. it was a really neat experience the spirit was really strong.

We also received transfer calls and we were told that I would be staying in Burnaby with Elder Arteaga.  And also that president Tilleman would like to visit with us on Tuesday.

So Tuesday, we woke up did our studies and went to the Office and sat for a while... I read Alma something I think 36 or 37, but really wasn't paying attention because of why we were at the office.  Elder Arteaga decided that he was going home so the interview was for that - needless to say that day was very ineffective.

Wednesday we worked some what hard we had a lot of appointments and Elder Arteaga had to pack. We taught a guy that we found on the street who has been super prepared to receive the Restored Gospel. He comitted to living the Word Of Wisdom and also the Law of chastity and to not missing a Sunday.

Thursday started off really early. like 4 15 because we had to have elder Arteaga to presidents house by 5 30 and the Assistants were picking us up. So I said good by to elder Arteaga. that was not fun it really stunk.  Then the assistants took me out to breakfast and then to the office where i waited till about 10ish for the training. I was told that morning that I would be covering 2 area's and also be training a brand new missionary who doesn't speak Spanish. =) i was super stressed.  We have been super busy.

Friday we played soccer and taught the people that came. it was really good. and we weekly planned.

Saturday we went to a district leader council and it was really spiritual. and powerful. That night we went and stopped by a former and we ended up finding a new investigator and the former and the new investigator ended up coming to church the next day and they really liked it it was such a good time.

Sunday we had busy day we were back and forth between areas. We taught that super prepared guy again. we moved up his date and he is going to be baptized really soon - the 24th of Feb.

Well hey I love you.

Have a fantastic week and day!

Weekly Letter - 28 Jan, 2013

Dear Family,
This week has been a difficult week. 3 of the 6 Elders in our district will be heading home at some time this week. 2 finished their mission its is really hard to say good bye to such great examples of Faith and Hope and Charity. They will be greatly missed. 1 of them is Elder Brantley he lives in Utah in american fork. I will be giving him your address and hopefully he will go and stop by on the way to his grandmothers house. he said he would=) I met his grandmother at Seagull Book and Tape with mom. I dont know if you remember that or not mom? the other is My trainer Elder Escobar. It is super weird to be saying goodbye to all my Friends/Family in the mission. the Elders that have been here since I got here. It is hard having to say good bye even though it is just for a moment. but when we shall have a reunion :

Now these sons of Mosiah were with Alma at the time the angel afirst appeared unto him; therefore Alma did rejoice exceedingly to see his brethren; and what added more to his joy, they were still his brethren in the Lord; yea, and they had waxed strong in the knowledge of the truth; for they were men of a sound understanding and they had bsearched the scriptures diligently, that they might know the word of God. ( Alma 17:2)
so i asked for questions and these are the ones that i have received.

  • How are things going for you?
  • I have written down that transfers called out today.  Any idea what might happen?
  • You mentioned last week that you had set a baptism date for someone.  Is that still the case?  How are things progressing there?
  • How many discussions did you teach this week?
  • How many people are you actively teaching?
  • Any cool Tracting experiences?
  • What has your weather been like?

Things are going very well for me here. I love it. The mission is just the best place in the world to be. i can not wait for you to go and serve the Lord for 2 years.Justin and Christopher. It is amazing!
Today is transfer calls. I am absolutely lost. there are going to be 3 of us here 1 in each of the areas and all of our companions are leaving so i really have no idea what will happen.

We did set a baptismal Date. Her mother is a member and her grandmother but the Father is not and that causes the mother not to be active. and this girl not to be baptized. But now that she has turned 16 her parents told her that she could get baptized. ( Kids here leave there homes and go live with friends at the age of 16, all sorts of trouble!)
this week we only had the opportunity to teach 2. This week was kind of a different one. I was on exchanges wednesday, thursday, friday and saturday. for lots of reasons. Wed. and thurs. our district leader came here to work with my companion, Friday the district leader needed my help because his companion was on exchanges and the new elder ( Elder Buttars) , got super sick when he came to Vancouver on exchanges and saturday i stayed with elder River ( the district leader) as well because The two elders leaving had a miracle happen in surrey. THey had a guy they invited on friday get baptized on sunday=) we all went out to the baptism. It was very powerful to see the 80 year old man want to make this covenant. so him and his wife can be sealed in the temple. his wife is and has been a member for most of her life. she is very active in the church. Amazing experience.
actively teaching 5 ish people. only a couple are progressing. some dont really want to be taught so we have to put them in a reflective pool and visit them later.

We don't do a whole lot of tracting and i cant think of any... the only one would be when elder Flexhaug broke his elbow. which is not really a "cool tracting " experience. we mostly contact people in the streets.
The weather is cold and humid. its 0 here. in Celsius most of the time. this week the has been very windy and wet which make the cold even colder. =)

More question are :
What do you do when you get up in the morning?  What  do you eat for breakfast?  (Remember fruit and yogurt are good for you!)

What time do you go out tracting? Do you tract everyday or do you have appts most days?  Remember this is before lunch...What do you do for lunch?  Do people buy your lunches like they do for missionaries out here?  What do you do after lunch?  The same as before lunch?  I envision appts in the evenings.  What time do you have to be back to your apartment?

What are the other Spanish areas?

In the mornings we get up, kneel down pray, exercise,   shower and get ready and at 730 we eat breakfast and 8 - 11 we study. 11 we eat and 12 we get out to work. For breakfast i usually eat, eggs and pancakes, or cereal or oat meal. ( fruit and yogurt are expensive )
we usually contact. we tract sometimes but it is super in effective for the Spanish elders to tract... so we have a Guia Latina. or a Spanish phone book and we look for people in our area and drop by their house =) haha. Lunch some times we have appointment of we eat at the house or McDonalds because its fast. it really depends on when. after lunch we either have appointments or we go and contact or do drop bys. not many people buy us lunch=) no not at all. Most of our appointments happen between 5 and 9. we have to be in the house at 9 or 930 if we are in an appointment.
There are 2 other Spanish areas. 1 is in Surrey ( i have a feeling right now i might be going there) the other is in Vancouver ( those elders are also in our ward)
This was a lot more fun and you got a lot more out of me!  The question thing works! it is in Preach my Gospel. =) chapter 10.
I love you lots!
Ask me more questions. ( open to anyone) I will email back through this email.!! Love you all
Have a fantastic week!!

Love,

Elder Taylor

Weekly Letter - 14 January, 2013

Dear Family,

How was your trip? It sounded as though it was a very interesting one to say the least.
This week was a really good one here in our Zone we had a very successful week thanks to fasting and lots of Pray and hard work! we know that your prayer and asking for blessings upon the missionaries.
This week in our Zne of 10 companionships we taught 35 lessons to investigators 19 came to church and 13 people have baptismal dates!!
The work is moving ON!!
I am so grateful for you and the example that you have set for me! I am so grateful for my loving Parents and Siblings, you taught me and i am here because i know its the right thing to do!
I love you so very much i dont know what more to say then i truely truely love you. I pray that the spirit will testify to you of the truthfulness of that.
Keep Smiling! Keep Going!

Even though its hard and dark and we cant see the end some time do what Lehi did.
1 Nephi chapter 8
5 And it came to pass that I saw a aman, and he was dressed in a white brobe; and he came and stood before me.
6 And it came to pass that he spake unto me, and bade me follow him.
7 And it came to pass that as I followed him I beheld myself that I was in a dark and dreary waste.
8 And after I had traveled for the space of many hours in darkness, I began to pray unto the Lord that he would have amercy on me, according to the multitude of his tender mercies.

---- Lehi was stuck in his trials and couldnt see the End so what did he do he prayed and this was his answer----

9 And it came to pass after I had prayed unto the Lord I beheld a large and spacious afield.
10 And it came to pass that I beheld a atree, whose bfruit was desirable to make one chappy.
11 And it came to pass that I did go forth and partake of the afruit thereof; and I beheld that it was most sweet, above all that I ever before tasted. Yea, and I beheld that the fruit thereof was white, to exceed all the bwhiteness that I had ever seen.
12 And as I partook of the fruit thereof it filled my soul with exceedingly great ajoy; wherefore, I began to be bdesirous that my family should partake of it also; for I knew that it was cdesirable above all other fruit.
13 And as I cast my eyes round about, that perhaps I might discover my family also, I beheld a ariver of water; and it ran along, and it was near the tree of which I was partaking the fruit.
14 And I looked to behold from whence it came; and I saw the head thereof a little way off; and at the head thereof I beheld your mother Sariah, and Sam, and aNephi; and they stood as if they knew not whither they should go.

----Once we know how to get through our trials we have to be there to help others. to invite them to come and to partake of the fruit, that happiness,----

15 And it came to pass that I beckoned unto them; and I also did say unto them with a loud voice that they should come unto me, and partake of the fruit, which was desirable above all other fruit.
this week i invite you to share your testimony with some one at school at church, in family night some where. In fact i invite you to night in your family night to have a small testimony meeting! will you share you testimony tonight?? Good i will follow up with you next week!

I love you! KEEP GOING, Keep SMILIING
With my love,
