Weekly Letter - 26 Feb, 2013

This is Narda.  She was baptized last week.
Good morning Family!

This week seems to have just flown by. I'm in the same seat about the same time each and every week. We have been busy. we work and work and work some more until we are just so tired that kneeling down to pray is hard because you have to get back up.

We have been out working hard with many members and Investigators this week. One in particular is an investigator by the name of Miguel. He has been changing his life around. He stopped drinking Beer and doing drugs he has plans to be married and to get baptized this week. Hopefully.

We are also teaching an investigator named Carlos. and his girlfriend Areli. They are progressing very well and quickly. I have such a great love for Carlos that i can not explain it. It is the most wonderful feeling. I know that he will be baptized. He comes to church and loves it. He knows what we are talking about. he feels like he has met us before. ( which i am sure he has just not here in this life) i also feel the same way. between visits this week he read all of 1st Nephi. and wrote down all of his questions. we are still trying to figure out a date of baptism for him. but nothing seems to fit. we are submitting to the will of the Lord. This is his mission things happen in His time and by His doing. We are just hands of HIS.Fantastic week this week. Dad asked me some questions.

  • How many people are you teaching right now?
~~ we are teaching quite a few people. we are consistently teaching about 10 as of right now.
  • How many baptisms are scheduled?
~~ We have 3 solid baptismal dates as of right now
  • Are you getting along with your companion? (and I want the truth)
~~ Of course we get along. You have to get along to have the spirit. and you have to have the spirit to teach with power and authority and be able to invite people to be baptized. so of course.

  • Any cool spiritual stories you would like to share?
~~ I have had many of my prayers answered this week as well as a deepening of my testimony and a knowledge of the scriptures. cool experiences. I had one the other day. We were in a lesson and i spaced for a minutes and then as i tried coming back in i could not under stand anything that was going on. and It ended up the lesson being passed over to me. and i had been praying and praying that i would be able to speak and testify and i know that the Spanish that came out of my mouth was not mine. it was words i didn't really know. I know you hear about experiences like this all the time but it is amazing as you Spanish is perfect and the lord really gives you that blessing!
  • With the church announcing 58 new missions this last week and lots of new missionaries, has your mission seen an increase in the number of missionaries yet?
~~ We saw an increase last transfer as we Recieved some of the new 18 year old Elders and 19 year old Sisters. we went up about 10 companionships and opened 10 new areas.
  • Name an interesting food item that you ate in the last week?
~~ We had some Pupusas. And i learned how to make real refried beans!

Well family i bid you adue and wish you the best of weeks.
I love you all and will talk to you all soon.

Tell Joshua Congrats and that i love him.

Weekly Letter - 12 Feb, 2013

Elder Arteaga & Elder Taylor
Good Afternoon, buenas Tardes,

How is everyone doing.?

This week has been a very busy one. We have been working very hard. We are trying to learn to cope with 2 areas and learning to understand Vancouver better.

We have 5 investigators that have baptismal dates. They are doing very well. All are progressing. This week we are going to set at least 2 more with a couple we found that i told you about in the last letter home. We found them last Saturday while we were following an impression we had to stop by a former investigator that we had been teaching. We stopped by and found his sister and her boyfriend in the house. This last Saturday we had the opportunity to go to his house and the cooked for us and we taught a little bit about how to know if God is really there. We found out later on in the lesson that 5 minutes before we had knocked on the door they had been talking about finding a church that they both liked. They want to get married and raise their kids in a church. Then we knocked on the door and invited them to come to church. He also told me that for some reason even though he has never met me i look familiar to him and that is why he felt like he should let us in.

We are also teaching another guy that has just touched my heart. He is from Honduras and he is just a really nice guy. We found him while my last companion and I were street contacting and he kind of looks a little rough around the edges. but he agreed that he would like to come to church and meet up with us. The first lesson we taught about the word of wisdom and committed him to be baptized.

It has been such a blessing to be teaching him. He has paid me some very touching compliments as well.

We are teaching a lot of other people right now as well.

My new companion (Elder Olsen) is doing fantastic. He is a year younger then me. We get along great. Its nice being with a white kid again =) not to sound mean... It is hard though because I'm having to teach him Spanish and how to be a missionary... and I barely speak Spanish as well.

He loves to work and work hard. He is from St. George Utah. He worked at the Pizza/Pasta Factory that we went to one time while we were visiting St. George. Mom ordered a salad and had a piece of wood in it. It is down by the temple in the basement of some place.

We have a lot to get done and have to be going really soon to a lunch appointment. i hope your week is fantastic.

I love you ALL!

Congratulations Megs.

Happy Valentines Day.

I'm on the down hill side of my mission... =(

I love you.

Story about Brandons Mission President

Karl Tilleman: An Example of Determination and Endurance

Contributed By Larry Carter of the Surrey British Columbia Stake
  • 18 JANUARY 2013

A two-time Olympic athlete, award winning lawyer, loving husband, father of five and University of Calgary royalty, “King” Karl M. Tilleman, now Mission President for the Canada Vancouver Mission, showed determination from an early age. This determination led to perseverance, strength of character, a notable career and a very strong relationship with his loving and supportive spouse, Holly Benson Walker.
Born in Ogden, Utah, Karl moved to Calgary, Alberta with his family when his father accepted a teaching position at the University of Calgary. In high school, Karl developed a love for basketball. At the University of Calgary, he quickly began racking up awards: Canada West Player of the Year and All Star in 1981, 1982, 1983, as well as Calgary Male Athlete of the Year 1981 and 1983. Basketball, although a major focus in Karl’s early life, is but a metaphor for determination and enduring to the end.
He played in the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, Alberta in 1983 and in 1984, was a member of Canada’s Basketball team at the Los Angeles Summer Olympics. During his first Olympic game, Karl found himself guarding Michael Jordan, his favourite basketball player, and came to the attention of the NBA’s Denver Nuggets. Karl was drafted in the 4th round of the 1984 NBA draft by the Nuggets, however upon arriving in Denver became very sick with the flu. Mostly recovered, he suited up to play in a pre-season game. When he gained the ball, he made a move toward the basket but stepped on another player’s foot, severely twisting his own ankle. As a result of the injury, Karl was cut from the team, providing an opportunity to fulfill a promise that he had made with the Lord to serve a mission.
After serving in the California Arcadia Mission, Karl attended law school at BYU. While there, he maintained his connection with Canada and traveled with the National Team in 1986 and 1987 and played again for Canada in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea.
Karl graduated summa cum laude (with highest distinction) in 1990 with the Order of the Coif and as editor-in-chief of the Law Review. He clerked for Justice Warren Burger of the United States Supreme Court and even tried to teach Justice Clarence Thomas to play basketball.
After law school, he joined Steptoe & Johnson LLP, a prominent international law firm, and eventually moved to their Phoenix, Arizona office. Here he earned significant peer recognition, including being listed amongst “Best Lawyers in America in 2011” and “Arizona’s Finest Lawyers in 2011.”
Prior to accepting his call in 2011 as Mission President, Karl was interviewed at the White House for an appointment as a Federal Court Judge, but realized that accepting the appointment would considerably change his priorities, so he turned down the position.
In preparing for their mission in British Columbia, President Tilleman and wife Holly had the unique experience of being in the MTC with two of their sons. Now responsible for the Canada Vancouver Mission, covering most of the province of British Columbia, an area 1.3 times the size of Texas. As mission president, he clearly understands his priorities and focuses much of his effort on helping new members become “enduring members.” During his calling, the Church has expanded missionary activity to Haida Gwaii (formerly the Queen Charlotte Islands) where there had been no missionaries since 1970. Very quickly a dependent branch was established.
A few months into their mission while on a proselyting appointment, President and Sister Tilleman visited a prospective member with two of their missionaries. After the lesson and discussion, they were leaving the home when President Tilleman asked permission to pet the owner’s rescued Bull Mastiff. The dog, on a leash, was calm, and the investigator gave permission. President Tilleman reached out to the dog, which suddenly bit his hand. The injury was severe, but he wanted to make light of the incident and proceeded to leave the house when he then fell on the concrete stairs. When he awoke, the paramedics were strapping him onto a backboard and putting a cervical collar on his neck. President Tilleman remembers calling out to their investigator as he was taken to the ambulance “It’s not your fault! I asked to pet him!” Unfortunately, he suffered a paralyzing injury as a result of the fall.
In hospital for seventeen days, President Tilleman acknowledged that the brethren might deem it wise to release him from his service as Mission President, yet he earnestly desired to carry on in spite of the physical challenges. He arranged for his missionary assistants to bring him files and phoned twice a day while he worked to regain his mobility. With Sister Tilleman’s daily assistance, priesthood blessings, his medical team and his life-long determination to persevere, he laboured to regain feeling and movement in his limbs. Today, President Tilleman no longer wears the neck brace and is energetically back holding firesides, training missionaries, meeting and teaching prospective members and bringing smiles to those around him.
Part of President Tilleman’s physiotherapy included regaining the ability to not only walk again, but specifically to be able to lower someone into the waters of baptism and successfully raise them out again. Jenny, the dog owner, was the first person he baptized when he was able to do so. The Tillemans, a forgiving, Christ-like and very determined couple, are now a part of Jenny’s life and part of the fabric of the Richmond Ward.
As a young athlete, Karl, showed determination and endurance; as an adult, President Tilleman continues to be an excellent example of those qualities and most importantly of Christ’s love.
